  • Yes it does come off, just tilt to the side & use a screwdriver to hold the clip off then tilt the other side, its difficult, be patient. By SnapperUK - Ayrshire - 01 May 2010
  • it is held on by two "y" clips on the knob be careful when you ease them off. By mrmboy - bognor regis - 21 April 2010
  • The outer knob is not present with the assy. You need to remove the one on the cleaner, this is a snap fit at two points. Slide a thin screwdriver in and lift the snap fit lugs to remove By Anonymous - Reading - 23 March 2010

Does the clutch assembly come with both belts as shown. When re attaching belt onto brush roller do i need a special tool to stretch the belt over.

By liliput21 - - 14 February 2009
  • yes it is supplied with both belts , i fitted the belt over the roller then reinserted the far end of the roller bar into the caseing then using a certain amount of force located the end nearest the belt. By mrmboy - bognor regis - 21 April 2010
  • yes both are fitted By Anonymous - Reading - 23 March 2010
  • The clutch assembly has both belts fitted. The brush belt can be fitted without the special tool but it is difficult. You can hook the belt with a screwdriver shaft and pull it up but you have to have very strong fingers and a high pain threshold. Be very carefull or you might break something. If you can get hold of the belt tool then use it. If i was to do it again i would make up a tool or buy one as there is a risk of damaging the roll, the casing or my fingers. Take care. • Don't, it's fiddly and in the end your better off buying the clutch than just the belts. I bought the belts for my clutch, what a pain to take apart and put back together. By GodsGift - West Sussex - 21 September 2014

You would need to access the clutch to check if it's physically working, also check the belt in case it has broken.

If you look at the third image of Stock Number: ES104123 you can make out where it attaches with three screws to the motor body. Identify and remove the third screw and you should be able to remove this.

Answer this question

Have watched you excellent videos, and the removal of the brush housing looks simple. However, the one on my cleaner is firmly stuck. It moves of course, but I cannot see a way to release it from the main body. Is there a catch that needs to be released?

From memory the brush housing just clips in place but can take a reasonable amount of pressure to remove it.

Remove hoses filters and bag or container and run for a few minutes. If there is a burning smell present and the cleaner is getting hot it may need another motor. If it runs ok see our video: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/4/1506/do-you-have-a-smelly-vacuum

The roller is meant to disengage when the cleaner is in the upright or parked position. There is a large cylinder type knob on the left when viewed from the front that twists to engage or disengage the roller as the unit is parked.

I have also tried prising it off with a screwdriver as advised on another website, but only succeeded in cracking the plastic on the vacuum cleaner body!

  • I'll answer my own question. My Dyson is about 12 years old and as it has never been serviced or needed any attention (well done Dyson) the brushroll housing had seized up in its socket. A squirt of WD40 helped the situation, but I would advise patience to give the WD40 time to work. I was impatientand although it released the brushroll housing a small peice of the socket broke off. Hopefully it'll go back OK!!!! By Anonymous - Preston, Lancs - 20 February 2012
