  • Take a look at the thermostat. If max cold has no effect - unplug mains- remove the screw that holds the thermostat cover. Probably only one and then slide the cover to release the tags. You will feel resistance once free - this is the metal tube! There is a small screw under the plastic cover. If turning it in brings the pump on then replace the thermostat. i have a fridge that is not cold infact i would say its warm it started to collect ice at the back now its just not cold at all ??? the make is hotpoint RLA31 can you help

  • The fact that your fridge was icing up, is a sure sign that the thermostat was on it's way out. The thermostat stops the cooling effect when it reaches a set temperature. If the fridge is not cold now, this usually means that either the compressor or the thermostat has failed (more commonly the thermostat). An electrician can check the compressor by bypassing the thermostat. If it starts, then you know it is the thermostat that has failed. By danny2873 - South Wales - 11 July 2009

Hi Jenjen, check this page out: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/fridges-and-freezers/a/2/278/identifying-fridge-freezer-parts.html The thermostat goes next to the control knob.

Hi Poolielad, it could be that your thermostat isn't working. I'd also check your thermostat control knob too. What I'd need to find you the right part is the model number if your fridge. For help finding it, use our guide: http://www.espares.co.uk/findingmodelnumbers.aspx#a3

Answer this question

I have a big old industrial fridge. Im pretty sure the thermostat is broken. My thermostat is a 2 wire model and looks exactly like this model. Are they fairly standard rating from fridge to fridge? I am not worried about the mechanics of fitting the switch as i will adapt it but wondered about the wiring (2 wires) and temp rating. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, PP......

Hi Papapedro, I'm afraid that with parts like thermostats, whilst all looking very similar, are model specific - only one type will fit your fridge, and any others simply will not work. I'll need your model number to find you the right one - use our handy guide to find it: http://www.espares.co.uk/findingmodelnumbers.aspx#a3

Hi Andretripicchio, in order to find you the right thermostat, I need to know one thing. Does the ice box door in your fridge swing out or swing down? There is two different thermostats, and which one you need depends on the ice box door.

  • Not Sure, RL81p is not listed in the Hotpoint listings. The thermostat is only a normally closed switch which opens when the temperature is cool enough. This particular unit has only two connections (apart from the earth), one for the supply (brown wire) which loops off to the door light, and the other is the switched supply(white wire) which goes down to the compressor. Give it a try if your wiring looks similar? By BigRonfaeAberdeen - Canny Scotsman - 07 April 2009
