My just under 5 year-old Hotpoint EW74's main oven died suddenly yesterday. I've done some testing and the connectors that connect to the motor have a resistance (when oven knob 'on') similar to the resistance of the ellement, 25ohm. The contact points, with connectors removed, of the motor is showing a resistance of 81ohm. Am I right in thinking that it should be close to 0, and that the motor is causing the rest of the oven not to work?

In simple terms a wire, fuse or switch must read low ohms as if you connect the meter probes together. All motors bulbs and elements should measure a resistance depending on the power used (between 25 ohms on an element and 4000 ohms on a water valve). When you measure 25 ohms on the motor you are also measuring the element at the same time (ok). Check for a cut out at the back top. check clock is set if fitted. oven indicator must light. possible switch, cut out or thermostat fault.

I have a Neff single oven model: B1441W0GB/05. I want to replace the fan motor but there is 3 shown when I input my model details. I think that 2 of them might fit but I would like confirmation. I can not see any dimensions on my motor so am unable to use that to check it.

We advised to use the original Neff part wherever possible and list others if this is no longer available. The non original motors may fit as a direct replacement but some times may need an amount of modification before they are made to fit your oven.

My Whirlpool oven heats up and the fan sounds like it's working but often it seems to lose power and stutters. It never goes off completely but stutters for a few minutes before running smoothly again. The last digit on the digital display is also very faint sometimes. Am I able to repair this fault before it breaks down completely?

It sounds like the fan motor bearings are worn. If the fan starts running slow or stops the element may overheat and fail so it is a good idea to replace the fan motor before this occurs.

Creda cooker with ceramic hob. this is a freestanding cooker. The sides of the cooker are turned around to overlap the back, so although there are screws to hold the back in place, the only way I can see to remove the back panel is to first unscrew and remove the ceramic hob as it appears that the back panel has to slide up to be removed. Has this cooker been designed so that when the cover panel over the fan is removed inside the oven, that the fan motor can be access from inside?

It may well be necessary to remove the hob and the sides to get access when removing the fan but cannot confirm this with the information available.

Answer this question

Every time I go to a new temperature setting the fan comes on for approx. 2 minutes and then turns off. Previously the fan ran continuously at all temperature settings.

It is likely the fan 'failing' was the cause of the element blowing. It is common for the fans to fail and this causes the element to overheat and melt.

This is a circulation fan that is for an electric oven. If you have a gas oven then the only fan will be a cooling fan above the cavity and behind the controls. This part would not be suitable to replace the cooling fan.

when I turn my oven on the fan makes a clattering sound do I need a new fan or is it something else ?

To help prevent damage to a fan element turn the thermostat down to minimum for thirty seconds before switching off. Switching straight off stopping the fan immediately when the element is hot can cause overheating and damage the element as the circulating air stops.

Answer this question

When the oven reaches correct temp the fan comes on (like normal) however after short while the fan will go OFF then ON and you can hear 'whirling noise' strangley the freeview picture on TV around 5 metres away will pixalate.... When the upper oven/grill is open fan stays on (like normal). Do you think the problem is the Universal Oven Fan Motor.?

By Peter - sunderland - 15 July 2012
  • HI From what you say the Fan is controlled by a thermostat being in the oven circuit i.e effectively a switch in series with the motor. For the TV picture to break up means that there is electrical interference close by so one theory is that There is "arcing" across the thermostat contacts as fan motors do not have brushes which can give problems. Only my guess and I may be wrong By Peter - launceston - 31 July 2012

  • I took a photo of mine before unplugging the connectors off the motor. If your motor only fits on one way, it should just go back on the same way. I`m no expert but it worked that way for me. By Anonymous - Somerset - 21 February 2012
