It is more likely the defrost element would cause the electrics to trip so start by checking that part.

I have had my fridge for about 15 years, it stopped running a few times and only started again when I turned the dial on this defrost unit. Now it seems to defrost about 3x per week (I assume so because I see water running out from underneath). Also the fridge does not get cold enough now. Also - I can only turn the dial in one direction.
