On 'simple' fridge freezers like this the thermostat monitors the fridge temperature and when required turns the compressor on. Then more of the cooling is directed to the freezer than the fridge to ensure it freezes correctly. These type of appliances are designed to be in a room warmer than 50 f and in a colder room because the fridge needs to work less this can cause the freezer to defrost.
