every time i use the dryer option on my hotpoint wd440g it trips the fuse. Any ideas on what the fault may be ?

The problem is likely to be the dryer element, there are two types fitted Stock Number: ES215164 and Stock Number: ES956494. Dismantle and check which type is fitted and if there is any signs of burn or damage to the element.
