I have a coalagas fire and all the heat seems to go to the chimney back and not into the room, it is a period fire grate and has a wide flat ledge either side and I thought maybe I could stand it on there.

It is designed to fit on the top of the stove on a smooth flat surface, it is not designed for a gas fire.
