Is this compatible with the tricity bendix SI453W cooker?

I just replaced a faulty ceramic hob element (the element wire had blown and was broken) on my the tricity bendix SI453W. But now, with the replacement element installed, the element comes on immediatley on switching the cooker on at the wall socket ie. the control knob is still in the off position yet the element heats up and cannot be turned off except at the wall switch. Might this mean that the regulator is damaged as well? I will try the new element on another ring to see if it works as expected but I'd welcome your advice. thanks.

Some times when a element blows the high current can cause the control contacts to 'weld' together. This is likely to have occurred and is why you cannot adjust or turn off this ring.
