How to descale an electric shower

Descaling a coffee machine is the same problem as descaling an electric shower; but I've found no-one who can offer a practical method of dealing with the latter - other than to throw it away and buy another. Hardly a "green" solution, is it? Do you have any suggestions? I'm sure that the world will beat a path to your door if you have a workable method to offer.
