I have a cordless hedge trimmer GTC410 which I haven't used for a couple of years. Having charged the battery it is still dead as a dodo. How do I know whether the battery, charger or both are defunct?

The likely problem will be the battery and a simple multi meter can show if there is a voltage on the contacts of the charger terminals.
