  Hi Kevstewbar This is a HEPA filter, which is a separate entity to a motor exhaust filter. These filters are for trapping high amounts of very small particles that other regular dust filters would not pick up. The exhaust filter (found here: http://www.espares.co.uk/part/vacuum-cleaners/electrolux/p/1086/15/0/0/1105539/hepa-exhaust-filter.html) works in much the same way as a car exhaust - it expels heat given off by the motor in the vacuum.
