Switched off tumble dryer mid cycle by mains switch(by mistake) since then no heat is available the water light is on but the water container is empty is this a thermostat problem or could it be something else

Yes this is a common problem if the dryer is hot and the air flow is stopped then these thermostats will cut out. If you measure them with a meter they should read short circuit, replace if this is not the case.
