Noisy Tumble Dryer

The tumble dryer is a very common and much used appliance in most homes, ideal for when you need to dry that favourite top you want to wear just after washing it. However like all appliances the dryer can fall victim to any manner of faults! Therefore if you are being serenaded by a noisy tumble dryer - we may be able to provide some insight on how to diagnose and repair the problem.

Bearings

The bearings help the drum in your dryer to turn and spin smoothly, to help identify if the bearings are the root to your noisy appliance follow these simple checks:

Safety First! Please make sure that you’ve switched off your appliance and disconnected it from the mains before beginning any repair.

Ensure that your dryer is level, if it isn't then the cabinet can twist causing the drum to catch on nearby parts.

  • If the tumble dryer is noisy when it's turning and the appliance shakes and rumbles, it could indicate a problem with the drum bearings.

To check the bearings you will need to identify your model number, this will help determine the type of bearing which is fitted to your appliance.

If you do need to replace the bearings, you can look through our range of tumble dryers spares for a replacement.

Drum Rollers

If there is a squeaking sound as the tumble dryer is working, the fault could possibly be from the drum rollers. These support the drum and revolve all the time while the drum turns. Small and wheel-like these parts run on a small metal shaft.

Over time the rollers will begin to dry out and wear down when this occurs the tumble dryer will emit a squeaking or rumbling noise.

Fan

The function of the fan is to circulate air around the tumble dryer. If your dryer makes a strange droning noise and vibrates through the cabinet, the likely reason may be the condenser fan out of balance. When the fan gets hot the blades can soften - in addition stopping the dryer before it has cooled can distort the fan making it go out of balance.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

Dismantle the tumble dryer and check the fan for any cracks in the blades.

  • Slowly spin the drum and check the fan is rotating without shaking.
  • If there is a build of debris coated on the fan blades clean using a paint brush.
  • Replace the fan if required.

Tension Pulley

Another common cause of a tumble dryer making a high pitched screeching noise, would be a defective tension pulley. In some situations a faulty pulley may cause the drive belt to come off. Here’s some helpful hints on how to identify a faulty pulley.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

  • Locate the pulley by removing the necessary cabinet panels.
  • Carefully release the belt off the pulley and check for excessive movement, by twisting the pulley side to side at right angles towards the bearing shaft.
  • Spin the pulley and listen for any loud noises produced and replace if needed.

If the pulley needs replacing see our range of spares to help restore your dryer back to its former self.
