How to Replace a Cooker Hood filter

The filters in your cooker hood play a vital role in keeping your extractor working at its full potential. If you’ve noticed your cooker hood isn’t working as efficiently as it once did and steam and smells caused by cooking aren’t being removed, then your cooker hood needs some TLC.

Excessive grease building up on your kitchen walls is a telltale sign that something is wrong.

Typically there are two types of cooker hoods: recirculation and vented. A recirculation hood cleans the dirty air as it enters inside and then returns it as cleaned air back into the kitchen. A vented cooker hood simply takes the grease and fumes and extracts it outdoors away from the kitchen.

So read on below to see how easy it is to change the filters in your cooker hood.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

What You Will Need:

Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

We’re going to make an exception on this occasion and leave the power on so you can see what we are doing.

Step 2 - Open Up The Cooker Hood

On this particular model we have to remove two screws to release the filter frame, however, if your model is different the process should still be fairly easy. We have a recirculating hood here, which has a large grease filter to remove airborne grease from the air.

Step 3 - Inspect The Filter For A Buildup Of Grease

As we have a recirculation cooker hood here, it has a carbon filter to remove odours caused by cooking. If you have a vented cooker hood then you’ll most likely only have a grease filter as the fumes are vented outside.

This model has a fabric grease filter, which has a clever way of reminding you of when it needs replacing. As soon as it becomes saturated and discoloured it will need to be changed.

Your model may have a metal grease filter, which does not need to be replaced but cleaned regularly. eSpares has a range of cleaning products to take the hard work out of cleaning your cooker hood.
