Washing Machine Door Interlock

The door interlock is an electronic device that is designed to give a time delay of approximately 2 minutes before the door of a washing machine can be opened once the wash/drying cycle has completed. Door locks should be checked regularly to ensure that they are working correctly.  During the cycle the door should remain locked; as it is can be extremely dangerous if this is not the case.

The common fault when a door interlock fails is that the washing machine will not start.  There will be power to the washing machine, which is usually shown if the light is present and lit up on the front fascia panel.  However, when the door is closed and the wash/drying cycle is selected and started the machine will appear 'dead'.

When I close the door and set the programme, the door lock light flashes and clicks repeatedly. The door lock light will not stay solid even though the door is firmly closed so the machine will not start filling. Would this be a door interlock problem or the PCB Board, please?

We believe it is likely to be the door lock, so check that first before suspecting anything else.

Answer this question

I Bought the door handle kit DST405508551 fitted... door still didn't close so thought it must be the door lock interlock system bought this and fitted. Still didn't close. Took everything off put back to old stuff. Holding lock in the machine until the door interlock clicks and the door stays shut and the machine runs no error codes. Any idea what is wrong????

Check the door has not dropped otherwise the door catch won't connect into the door lock correctly causing it not to lock.

If the door lock is not activating the washing machine will not start so it will do nothing.

Answer this question

The AEG Lavamat 72640 is showing an E40 error, I have checked the manual for the E40 error and done the following (replaced main fuse, check door is closed firmly, checked drain tap at the front bottom right). But the washing machine is still showing an E40 error and won't allow for the wash to start, it turns on but won't start on any wash cycle.

E40 is a door lock error and may need replacing, for more information see our video: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/7/2498

Answer this question

The interlock clicks like it always has when I start the machine, then beeps and says E40. Is there a way to tell if the interlock is the problem and needs replacing? Its a John Lewis JLWM1407

It is likely a new lock will resolve the problem.
