Thermostat

If you are noticing that the temperature in your fridge freezer is not consistent, or has changed from what it has been set to, it could be due to a faulty thermostat. The thermostat in your fridge freezer regulates the temperature to help ensure your food is kept at the correct temperature.

Will it feed through a dedicated tube, or will I need to feed through to the back then pass it down and back through to the freezer?

Usually the thermostat phial is passed through a flexible tube that is moulded in the insulation. This is shown in our video: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/2/1555/how-to-replace-a-fridge-thermostat

  • Chris, this thermostat comes with a phial that leads down to the freezer to specifically monitor the temperature in the freezer. By Dave - bristol - 16 July 2014

If you have a fridge freezer with a thermostat fitted in the fridge it will only monitor and control the fridge temperature and fitting the thermostat is relatively simple. The freezer will receive most of the cooling when ever the fridge needs to work and therefore will be a lot colder as a result if in normal use. In a 'cold' kitchen below 50f the fridge does not need to cool so much and this can cause the freezer to defrost in very cold situations like a garage in winter.

Answer this question

I have a Hotpoint Fridge Freezer (RF68S). It is a basic fridge/freezer (not frost free). The red warning light for the freezer temperature started to come on sporadically a couple of weeks ago and has deteriorated to the point that the light is on constantly. The temperature varies through the day between -3degC and -11degC. The compressor is switching on but not staying on for long (5-10 minutes). I've tried to check the operation of the thermostat and by having it set on full cold (for the fridge) the compressor stays running - the freezer temperature drops slowly (I've not left it long enough yet to see if the freezer manages to return to its correct temperature). If I turn down the dial (demand a warmer temp) for the fridge the compressor stops - should it do this if the freezer has still not reached its correct operating temperature? Is this an indication that the thermostat has partially failed (perhaps for the freezer but not the fridge control)? Additionally - the freezer is coldest at the top but the top has the largest number of heat exchanger plates/coils vs the bottom.

Check your appliance is cooling correctly (even frosting on all the evaporator pipes) if there is only partial frost you may need a fridge systems engineer. If this is OK the problem may be down to a hot environment and frequent disturbance of the freezer.
