The lint & fluff filter in your tumble dryer helps ensure that fibres and lint from your clothes are filtered out during the drying process, and a working lint filter will help save on energy bills compared to a tumble dryer operating with a worn lint & fluff filter. If you have a damaged filter, it will mean your tumble dryer having to work much harder to remove moisture from your clothes, and it will take longer to do so too. An excessive build-up of flammable lint can also cause a fire hazard.
