Yes the pinion connects to the motor and holds the belt.
Hi, is there some sort of tool to remove the old pinion as we are struggling to remove it Thanks

Sorry but we do not have any information on this repair. The pinion looks like it has a 'grub screw' in it's base that may be released using a Allen key.
Is the pinion supplied with grub screws to lock in position?
- No. remove roll pin and re-use
