My Dishwasher is Not Filling With Water?

Dishwasher’s make life that little bit easier for us don't they? They have helped solve the question that gets raised in many homes after meal time - which is “Who’s doing the washing up today?” However, if upon opening the door you are witness to the contents showing that they have not been cleaned during the most recent washing cycle - you can soon be on your way to finding out why.

One reason could be that the dishwasher is not correctly filling with water. By following this guide you should hopefully be able to identify the fault that's causing your machine not to fill. You'll soon be on your way to resolving the issue and get water flowing into your dishwasher once again.

Solenoid Inlet Valve

A possible cause which could lead to your dishwasher not filling at all may be a faulty inlet valve (also known as a fill valve). If you suspect that your valve is no longer operating at its optimal performance, you can see our helpful steps below to assist you in some checks that you can do - so you can hopefully get your dishwasher working like new once again.

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

  • Check the solenoid valve flow meter for any signs of damage.
  • Remove the fill hose.
  • Carefully remove the small filter from the inside of the valve or the hose seal filter if fitted and inspect for blockages. If the filter is clear, the solenoid valve is likely to need replacing. Prior to replacing check the water valve for faults using a multimeter.

Water Leak

A common appliance mishap you tend to hear about is the dishwasher not filling.

When you constantly hear the dishwasher pumping out water but it is not then filling as it should, it is likely due to water gathering in a shallow tray in the dishwasher. Once this water reaches a certain level it will activate the anti-flood switch, and this will then instruct the dishwasher to pump out the water and shut off to prevent it from refilling again.

If you have been unfortunate enough to encounter this experience, you’ll know the pain of having to pull out the gloves to do the dishes by hand yourself. A dishwasher not filling can be very stressful, and there could be various reasons as to what is causing this to happen.

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Inspect for:

  • Build up of water in the base that may be causing an overflow - check this by tipping the machine slightly to one side, allowing excess water to flow away onto the floor.
  • Ensure there is no holes or damage to any of the internal parts causing the leak into the base.
  • A combination of error codes may be displayed or by a resounding tone, which will indicate the anti-flood switch being turned on due to leaks.

Printed Circuit Board

The PCB (printed circuit board) is the brain to your appliance, and can otherwise be known as a control board or module. The function of a control board is to ensure that the dishwasher can run its programs, and also display the relevant information, (the later is relevant if it is a display circuit board).

If the module fails then you could be stuck with an appliance that can no longer be used, as the program settings can be unreliable or simply not work at all.

Unfortunately diagnosing a faulty PCB can be difficult - unless there is some visual indication of the fault. Identifying the cause may be near impossible and would require a replacement to have your appliance restored back to its normal working condition. 

Here we show you how to check the display PCB that sits behind the control panel of your dishwasher.

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

  • To gain access to the PCB, you will have to remove the outer panel.
  • If you drop the door down you will see a set of screws that will go through the inner panel to the outer panel.
  • With the panel out of the way remove the screws from the control panel and the PCB will be located behind.
  • Look for visual signs of damage to the PCB or a loose terminal connection and replace as required.
