How to Fit a Washing Machine Door Handle - Indesit

Maybe you got a bit impatient when waiting for your laundry and you pulled really hard on the washing machine door handle causing it to break. Or maybe the kids were playing a bit rough with the washing machine door and that's what broke the handle. No matter what the cause was, replacing a door handle on most washing machines is quite easy. In this video Mike will show you how it's done.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

What You Will Need:

  • Door Lock
  • Screwdriver
  • Knife
  • Device to take photos on (i.e. camera)

Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Remove Washing Machine Door

The first step to do is to remove the door from the washing machine, as it will be easier to work on the handle. To remove the door, use a torx head screwdriver to unscrew the screws holding the door in place, and lift it off.

Step 3 - Separate The Door in Two

With the door off, it will need to be separated into two halves so that you can get to the latch mechanism. To split the door, use a flat head screwdriver to undo the screws, followed by a blunt knife to slide around the edge to remove the two parts from each other.

Step 4 - Removing Old Handle From Door

Put the outer door and glass aside, leaving you with just the inner door with the handle mechanism to work on. With this part of the door closer to you, using a thin screwdriver push the pin which is holding everything together through, enabling you to release all the handle bits.

eSpares Top Tip: Take a couple of photographs of either sides of the handle so that you know how to put it back together afterwards.

Step 5 - Fitting New Handle to The Door

With the old door handle mechanism removed, take the new mechanism unit and begin putting it together, starting with the spring, followed by the latch. Once these are in place, push the pin halfway in.

Once the pin is halfway through and all the holes are aligned,  push the pin all the way through.

Step 6  - Refitting The Door Back Together

Now your new handle is added to the door, time to reassemble it together. First slip the glass underneath the handle and line up the notch, before adding the second part of the door to click into place. Leaving you to screw everything in place and then reattaching the door to the machine.
